Internet Explorer "Fake Virus Threat"

I have been getting fake pop ups telling me I need to prectect my computer by going to a webpage. Also if I open up internet explorer im redirected to a page that tells me its reccomended to go to a site and download this perfect defender 2009. i looked on google and it said this is a fake Virus threat and if i download this defender i get more virus' or whatever. how can i find the infected file and how do i remove any or all possible infected files. Please help as soon as possible thanks
