A number of staffers at Queens Intermediate School 73 became upset when they discovered "new or slightly used books tossed into a Dumpster outside The Daily News has a photo of the books, which include "Little Women, "Sarah, Plain and Tall, and "Treasure Island,

jessica: Sadly, incidents like these happen too often. So many organizations need books, it's almost a shame to throw books in good shape away.

todd: on the other hand: there are *tons* of books in the first world and just handling them is a large amount of work. they're heavy, they get moldy if they get damp, they have to be moved and sorted and stored and so on. i used to love physical books--reasonable user interface. but more and more i'm looking forward to a day when we get rid of them and everyone can just read anything they want on a book reading device.

mabrown: That's futurist insanity. Or seen from another angle, I refuse to give up my fire and smoke damaged, moldy, heavy and sensuously physical books.

todd: mabrown: why? have you tried a kindle? or the sony reader? what's better about books than those?

jhota: that's screwy. one: it's terrible to toss out good books. tw:-O recycling, anybody? better than filling a landfill with wonderful, recyclable paper.
