Pakistan Breaks the InterTubes
Pakistan Telecom mistakenly hijacked the networks run by Google-owned YouTube. They only intended to shut them down inside of Pakistan (under government order), not to shut them down for 75% of the world. From the article: "A few hours ago, Pakistan Telecom (AS 17557) began advertising a small part of YouTube's (AS 36561) assigned network." This is a good, technical write-up.

Shimon: jhota: government censorship of YouTube is a bad thing. I mean, what kind of democracy can exist under the suppression of such critical discourse as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIQrBouWRiE ?

jessica: Too bad I didn't know about this incident last night when I was talking about Internet routing over dinner. It would have added nicely to the conversation.

notgneiss: Thank you, Shimon.

jhota: while i'm not a fan of government censorship, neither am i a fan of Jimmy Kimmel. i find him insufferable.

todd: people were pretty upset about this being youtube. the coverage has been better than i would have thought. i saw a lot of really clueful mainstream and tech press getting this story right.

todd: i'm about to do a radio interview on kpcc, the npr affiliate in Los Angeles.

todd: Anything people think should I should focus on?

todd: Radio show over. The interview went really well. I was on with Ryan Singel who writes for Wired's Threat Level blog. He's a smart guy and the questions from the host were really well-researched and cogent, if for a lay audience.

todd: I'm interested in the way in which the coverage of this event seems to have been more clueful than most tech coverage.
