Gross Happiness Index
Because of the news about the rise of happiness, this Weekend America piece about a gross happiness index caught my ear. Darrin McMahon, who wrote about happiness, shares some thoughts.

"I came to a realization in the process that many people who study happiness have come to as well -- and that is that if you think too much about it and you focus too much, it eludes your grasp. Go on a walk by the beach. Don't do it for happiness, do it because you like the beach and you want to be with your family and what it is that you do. Then hopefully happiness will come to you, rather than you always trying to grab it and having it squirm out of your hands in the process."

donkeykonguk: the best definition of happiness I've found was the one I saw on a sign outside of a Honolulu car repair shop: "Happiness is a choice, not a reaction."

Chuck: Heh... there is a wikipedia article for everything: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjoyment. In the end I think happiness revolves more around being content than anything else.
