Reyes said that the House is moving closer to approving a bipartisan Senate passed extension of the law, which contains immunity for telecommunications companies that have previously assisted the government in listening in on potential terrorists' communications.

Jim Cowie: My take on this is the same as my take on the legality of torture -- leave them illegal. If the government believes that it will prevent a nuclear detonation, let them break the law and then show us the details. If they're right, and we believe them, the president will pardon them, no harm, no foul. But you have to really believe that it's that serious before you violate the laws of the land.
