Vaginal Ejaculation Disorder
Apparently a significant percentage of Japanese young men can no longer achieve orgasm during vaginal intercourse (making them similar to a significant number women everywhere :-) but that's a different story). Explanations run from odd masturbation technique to exposure to too much pornography. I find it difficult to believe the numbers posted in the story, but the fact that it is significant at all is fascinating. What does this say for the way that normal, human sex is heading?

todd: Shimon: you are a bad, bad person. I find lots of the writing about sex in Japan to be alienating and concerning. The stores where women dress up as maids and cater to the whims of young male geeks, for example. Very, very odd to me. But Japan has been a cultural vanguard for the past few

Shimon: todd: I'm not so sure we should expect the same trend elsewhere. While Japan has pioneered a lot of technology-related culture, they've maintained a society more monolithic than just about any other country on Earth.

Shimon: Consider therefore that that this sexual dysfunction could be caused by a sort of psychological virus; a pathology triggered by exposure to porn and unrealistic synthetic sexual stimulation during adolescence. In a more diverse society, people presumably have a correspondingly diverse set of ways to

Shimon: masturbate, and thus wouldn't all be exposed to this virus.

Shimon: Ironically, then, its pathological inability to reproduce may force Japan to import people from other cultures. If they take care to find immigrants who actually like actual sex, which doesn't seem so hard, Japan as a society may benefit in the long term.

todd: All sound points. Japan's population growth problems could be easily solved by opening up its borders to people from other, population-rich countries. But Japan has never been able to do that.

smckenzie23: First, I shudder to think of the google search string todd issued to find this link. Second, I'm considering a trip to Japan.
