While watching the televised Olympics gymnastics competitions, I began thinking about how viewing only the top teams was influencing my perception of the event. I realize time is limited: NBC can't show every team competing at every event. By not seeing some of the athletes who don't do as well as the top athletes, I don't have a good idea of what makes them so much better than others. It's the philosophical question: how can we know what is good without knowing what is bad?

I think I only saw one member of the bronze medal Romanian team compete. I had to look up the complete event results on the Olympics website because I hadn't learned them from watching the broadcast or reading the newspaper article about the event.

What are your thoughts? Is only seeing the best athletes and most popular competitions the best way to view the Olympics? What events do you think they could cover better? What sports would you watch that they aren't showing during prime time?

NBC doesn't even show every event. Handball, Modern Pentathalon, etc., just don't get the coverage. the only stuff NBC wants to cover (for obvious financial reasons) are the events where there is either a large US following (Association Football, Basketball) or there's a better-than-average chance of the US medaling (Women's Gymnastics, Swimming). sadly, there's no way we can get "good" or even "full" Olympic coverage with the current broadcast model. the only way to really see all you want is to attend in person.

i also really disagree with the "attend in person" strategy. it's almost impossible to get tickets to almost anything. the only way to really watch the olympics is to download (or stream from nbc.com) the stuff you want to see.
