This is either shocking or completely unsurprising, depending upon one's expectations for the integrity of the Internet. I understand that earl and his team at Renesys found a number of other hijackings (or at least "not obviously authorized originations") for other root name servers while they were looking at this case. I'd love to see the details for those published, too.
I'm running three root servers. Doesn't everyone?

over at the renesys blog, bill manning says that the reason to operate a name server at the site is to collect data for DITL-2008. seems plausible, but still disconcerting.
