The wreck of the Andrea Doria, which has the reputation for being the Mount Everest for divers because of its depth and complexity, offers keepsakes, thrills, danger, and, sadly, sometimes death. The 697-foot Italian luxury cruise liner sank the morning after colliding with a Swedish vessel in 1956. Because the ship rests in international waters and has no assigned salvage rights, divers can take souvenirs, like a piece of china. Being able to do that entreats people to venture deep into the dangerous wreck for something to prove they were there.

while i don't much care if people dive on the wreck or not, the pursuit of "souvenirs" bothers me. it seems like grave robbing: they aren't salvaging these artifacts for any reason other than personal gratification. were i a diver, i'd love to dive the Andria Doria. but all i'd take would be pictures.
