Would you friend or have you friended your boss on Facebook?
Today's Boston Globe has a front page article about friending bosses on Facebook and how awkward it might be. If a boss initiates the friend request, is there an obligation to respond positively? How do you feel about friending coworkers, superiors, and subordinates on social networking sites? How does or would having coworkers in your online circle of friends change your behavior?

colby: I think this is a very interesting question. I feel that what you do in your free time is your business. I know when I was teaching, I was much stricter on what I allowed to be shown on my social networking profiles. It was not so much my boss I was worried about, but parents of my students. I think it's a shame to those people that may apply for a job and don't do a lot of policing of their profiles and the company doesn't hire the person because of something they saw online.

jhota: would depend on the job. current? sure. my boss was a friend long before he made the mistake of hiring me. but back when i was a corporate wage slave? heck no. but that's mostly because i had absolutely nothing in common with my bosses in those days.
