Penguins steal amazing victory from Detroit in triple overtime
The Red Wings were 34 seconds from winning the Stanley Cup championship. They were dominating. Their fans were chanting "We want the Cup!" endlessly. And yet the Penguins would not let it happen, battling until 12:30am EDT to keep the season alive for another game.

todd: winter: yeah, that was my point the last time this came up on babbledog. i think the NHL is in deep, deep trouble. this is the least hype and awareness about the stanley cup championship that i can ever recall.

Jim Cowie: they've been beating NBA in detroit tv ratings during this cup, which is saying a lot
Posted Jun 03, 2008

todd: that is a big deal. but nationwide? nothing. radio & tv had more coverage of random baseball games than the hockey.

Jim Cowie: i blame it on global warming

colby: The MMA fight with Kimbo Slice on Saturday night killed the stanley cup in ratings. That is definitely not good for the NHL. That being said, there are very few sporting events that are as exciting as playoff hockey. I tried my best to stay up for the whole game last night, but fell asleep at the start of the second OT.

bj: i don't care too much if non-hockey fans know that it's happening, to be honest todd. :-) the arenas are packed every game and that says something. if they failed to sell out during the playoffs i'd begin to seriously worry.

colby: Look what perhaps the most popular athlete in the world, Tiger Woods had to say about hockey. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Tiger-Woods-ambassador-of-sports-except-for-ho?urn=nhl,85795

todd: tiger's right. no one watches hockey anymore. :-)

colby: What's worst then winning a championship not at home. The Red Wings won last night in Pittsburgh and were celebrating while the crowd just looked on amazed.

colby: Go Celtics!!!!
