The Boston Globe explains the circumstances and process behind reducing a female blue whale to her skeleton for an exhibit at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum in Vancouver. She washed ashore on Prince Edward Island in 1987 and was buried with the thought that the natural decomposition process would remove her flesh from her bones. Scientists found mummified flesh instead and have quite a task ahead of them to get her bones. Not only do they have three people on hand tasked with keeping knives sharp, but they have a special lumberjack's chainsaw, too. They will soak the remains in special, large enzyme vats in Vancouver to remove what they can't remove with tools, especially the noxious oil from the blubber.

don't they have ants in canada? seems like insects should be able to reduce most any size mammal to clean bones in a matter of days to months.

Isn't rancid whale blubber a delicacy somewhere?
