The malware lifted "track 2" data stored on the magnetic strip of customers' cards as customers used them at point-of-sale machines. The data includes the card number and expiration date, but not the customer's name. The malware stored records of the purchases in batches and periodically transmitted them to an unidentified offshore internet service provider, according to the company.

I just got my new credit card in the mail because I used my old one at Hannafords.

Did you replace your card on your own or did Hannafords notify you about the data breach?

My bank sent me a letter saying they saw I used my card at Hannafords and would be sending me a new one shortly. A few days later, I got a new card with a letter saying they didn't think my card had been messed with, but to get rid of my old one and use the new one just in case

It's really good of your bank to do that. I was involved in a breach a few years ago that I think the merchant handled poorly. While the breach was well-publicized, the merchant put the burden on its customers to figure out whether their cards had been compromised. I got conflicting information from the merchant about that. I decided to replace my card. I still don't trust the merchant. They never fully explained what happened or what security measures they've taken to prevent such a theft in the future.

I remember that story. A concerned shopper is talking about something else.
