Prosecuting this case under the law sounds like it's trickier than it needs to be. Would it be proper for companies running sites where people create online profiles to be able to take legal action against users whose actions result in negative consequences?

i agree, jessica. this sounds like a nightmare to prosecute. i understand that prosecutors are political animals and the press is all worked up about this. it's clear that the woman is dispicable. it's not clear that she violated any lab.
