One interesting aspect about authenticity is keeping secrets online. Some people put all the fine details of their lives online and others don't. One fellow said folks who only know a friend of his online would probably not know he has children because he doesn't mention them. Is withholding that information jeopardizing his authenticity? How much does that matter? When does preserving privacy trump or jeopardize authenticity?

I wonder if that laptop bag design change will really solve the security problem. I have a sleeve case for one of my laptops and a screen-protecting sleeve that fits over the entire top of the computer. The security officers will not usually let me keep my computer in the case when I put it through the x-ray machine and I often have to remove the screen protector, too. It seems to me that they need to see the entire laptop to make sure that what is in the sleeve going through the x-ray is actually a computer.

I'm not sure why Horn felt he had to go outside to defend his neighbor's property and why he decided to shoot the fellows. I can't speak for Horn. In certain circumstances, when people feel like the authorities are not responding at all or not responding in a timely fashion, they might be more likely to take matters into their own hands. Perhaps Horn feared the robbers would escape before the police arrived and he wanted to make sure they were caught. Once the dispatcher knew Horn had a shotgun and was intending to go outside to use it, it seems like he should have aggressively informed Horn about the arrival of the officers so Horn wouldn't have shot any of them accidentally. I don't think the dispatcher said anything about that until Horn came back on the line after shooting the robbers. Then, he was quite insistent about Horn not shooting anyone else. The dispatcher was probably doing the best he could do under the incredibly stressful circumstances. I can't imagine what it must be like to try to talk someone down from shooting someone else.

I am often surprised at how women must compete before being allowed to compete in a sport. Women's history, even in the United States, is filled with stories of them convincing men they can participate in sports. I'm a little surprised the article's author didn't address whether there's anything in Islam that would prevent a woman from being an athlete, besides clothing issues in certain cultures. To me, that seems more like an excuse than a real reason. Women are enterprising enough to adapt their appropriate dress to any number of physical activities.

Todd, from reading the CNN article and Thom Yorke's comments, it sounds to me like Radiohead was interested in watching the videos and might have permitted them to remain on YouTube. Prince's record label was the one that had them pulled. It seems like it's more common for the copyright holder to make a takedown request than the person doing the potential infringement. LoJack for laptops sounds like a good idea. I wonder how well it really works, though. The review sounds promising. Is likely, though, that laptop thieves use the laptops they steal? I've heard that many laptops get scrapped for parts or sold very quickly to other people. I also wonder how effective sending 15-minute messages to law enforcement about the laptop's location is. Will the police drop whatever it is they're doing to try to track down a stolen laptop as soon as it phones home? That sounds like something from a television crime show to me. Thanks to everyone who came to last night's meeting to chat about Babbledog! We got some really fabulous feedback. Your ideas about what you like and dislike and what you'd like to see on the site and do with Babbledog are very helpful to us. We appreciate opportunities to talk with the Babbledog community and potential community members. :)

And now that we have this bit about Hitler and Godwin's Law, let me point out that we've absolutely now experienced the law. (Actually, I'm quite certain Hitler and Nazism has come up on Babbledog before.) Godwin's post provides a great explanation for the law and why he started popularizing it: "Although deliberately framed as if it were a law of nature or of mathematics, its purpose has always been rhetorical and pedagogical: I wanted folks who glibly compared someone else to Hitler or to Nazis to think a bit harder about the Holocaust." He elaborates about why he wants people to think more seriously about their comparison of others to Nazis, especially in online spaces, and what it means to "Never forget."

We can all hope the economy is that resilient. I can't help wondering if people's financial behavior would change if the media would stop talking about the recession and how we can cope with it. Granted, the media ignoring certain situations doesn't make them go away, but media hype can be very influential. If the media starts reporting the recession is over and people's spending behavior changes, the economy could improve.

This shooting is a huge tragedy. One of the crime shows I watch had a similar story line not too long ago. I wouldn't want to be in the position of a police officer who has a split second to decide whether someone's reaching for a gun and how I should respond to that action.

This news makes me feel discouraged. I recently figured out that it's easier for me to take two smaller bags than one giant suitcase, but I don't think I want to pay an extra fee for that convenience. I agree with the fellow who says people will probably just bring more onto the plane instead of checking a second bag, which will lead to more crowding inside the cabin. People will also probably use bigger suitcases, which could cause problems for the luggage handlers. I guess we'd all better learn how to pack even lighter.

I think one of the interesting aspects of this situation is that people are widely referring to Thomas as a pregnant man. Even a few years ago, it seems like most of the media would have refrained from identifying Thomas as a man and might have referred to him as a former woman or transgendered person or something along those lines, but
