Each time this discussion arises, I can't help thinking about how many women look younger than they actually are. Asian women seem to have this reputation more than women of other nationalities. Like some of the NBC announcers said, how many times have we thought a young woman is as old as she says she is. I'm curious about the truth in this matter.

The TSA's announcement answers some of what you ask. It sounds like you can put them in the same bag, but you have to put the bag into the x-ray machine in such a way that the computer compartment is separate from the portion with all the cables and other stuff. I picture bags that have the compartments zipped or velcroed together to make it easy to disconnect them from each other to go through airport security.

I wonder if the patterns of alcohol consumption on college campuses would change with a lower drinking age versus a change in the United State's attitude toward alcohol consumption and more education about the dangers of alcohol and drinking responsibly. Do other cultures have the similar problems with people seemingly binging on alcohol when they live on their own for the first time or reach the legal drinking age?

One interesting aspect about authenticity is keeping secrets online. Some people put all the fine details of their lives online and others don't. I wonder if that laptop bag design change will really solve the security problem. I have a sleeve case for one of my laptops and a screen-protecting sleeve that fits over the entire top of the computer. The security officers will not usually let me keep my computer in the case when I put it through the x-ray machine and I often have to remove the screen protector, too. It seems to me that they need to see the entire laptop to make sure that what is in the sleeve going through the x-ray is actually a computer.

I'm not sure why Horn felt he had to go outside to defend his neighbor's property and why he decided to shoot the fellows. I can't speak for Horn. In certain circumstances, when people feel like the authorities are not responding at all or not responding in a timely fashion, they might be more likely to take matters into their own hands. Perhaps Horn feared the robbers would escape before the police arrived and he wanted to make sure they were caught. Once the dispatcher knew Horn had a shotgun and was intending to go outside to use it, it seems like he should have aggressively informed Horn about the arrival of the officers so Horn wouldn't have shot any of them accidentally. I don't think the dispatcher said anything about that until Horn came back on the line after shooting the robbers. Then, he was quite insistent about Horn not shooting anyone else. The dispatcher was probably doing the best he could do under the incredibly stressful circumstances. I can't imagine what it must be like to try to talk someone down from shooting someone else.

Women's history, even in the United States, is filled with stories of them convincing men they can participate in sports. I'm a little surprised the article's author didn't address whether there's anything in Islam that would prevent a woman from being an athlete, besides clothing issues in certain cultures. Photo blogs are fabulous. It's an interesting coincidence that The Boston Globe is calling theirs the Big Picture when Harvard University's Gazette used to feature a special photo column in each issue called the Big Picture. (I'm not sure whether they still do that because it's been a while since I've seen a print copy of the Gazette.)

Wow. It looks like Hillary is planning to support Obama. I found an email she sent to supporters with the announcement on her campaign blog. Saying today that the change is coming Saturday is like telling a romantic partner a breakup might be coming soon.

Todd, from reading the CNN article and Thom Yorke's comments, it sounds to me like Radiohead was interested in watching the videos and might have permitted them to remain on YouTube. Prince's record label was the one that had them pulled. It seems like it's more common for the copyright holder to make a takedown request than the person doing the potential infringement. And, yes, it's probably unreasonable to expect YouTube to try to figure out who the real copyright owner is in all cases.

Oh, man. At least one of the Boston area stations began broadcasting the aftermath of the train wreck shortly after it happened and stayed on the air giving play-by-play (so to speak) details of the rescue efforts. I finally turned the television off after a few hours, during which time they had still not freed the operator. I hoped for the best. :( My condolences to her family.

Ouch! What a crash! Notgneiss probably has a speculation or two about the cause of this crash. Depending on the state of the pilot's body, they might be able to do an autopsy to try to figure out if some kind of health problem might be to blame. It sounds rather sudden.

On the one hand, I'm shocked that in 2008, someone still needs to write an article introducing people to vegetarianism. On the other hand, I'm really happy Taylor Clark wrote that paragraph explaining to chefs how to have good vegetarian options on their menus. I often prefer vegetarian dishes to meat dishes and am sometimes disappointed at the meatless options on menus.

What an interesting piece! Jennifer Foote Sweeney doesn't seem to have talked with Carol, John McCain's first wife, nor does she indicate that she tried to contact Carol or that Carol denied her an interview. Carol's thoughts are a missing piece in this tale, at least to me. We can make all kinds of assumptions about what Carol was thinking or trying to do, but only she knows for certain.
